A former Buckingham Palace chef has exposed the royal family’s eating habits – revealing the Queencouldn’t stand garlic and had Kellogg’s cereal for breakfast.
Darren McGrady said Diana’s guests never knew she was eating a low fat version of their food, Prince Philip wandered round the house looking like the “gardener” and Harry and William loved McDonald’s.
Mr McGrady worked in the palace kitchen for 11 years before going on to serve the Princess of Wales.
The roles gave him a unique insight into the dining etiquette of Britain’s most famous family.
“The Queen loves to eat any food from the estate – so game birds, pheasants, grouse, partridge…but she also loves chocolate, the darker the better,” Mr McGrady told Marie Claire .
Surprisingly, the chef said the Queen often ate fruit out of a plastic yellow tupperware container.
But she also ate from a £500,000 marble dish encrusted with diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds.
William and Harry appeared to be like any other child.
“I remember the Princess [Diana] came into the kitchen one day and said, ‘Cancel lunch for the boys I’m taking them out, we’re going to McDonald’s.
“And I said, ‘Oh my god your royal highness, I can do that, I can do burgers.’ And she said, ‘No, it’s the toy they want.'”
Mr McGrady also revealed he completely revamped the menu to cut out fats and keep Diana happy.
The princess loved fish, never ate red meat and steered clear of anything with mayonnaise or sour cream it it, according to the chef.
He also said Philip would walk around in and out of the kitchen in “tatty old clothes”, prompting him to mistake the prince for a “gardener”.
But when the family did come together for dinner, they donned their ball gowns and black ties in true Downton Abbey style.
