Military personnel from the United States and Australia will be taking part in beach landings that will be the largest seen since World War 2.

The drills in north Queensland, Australia, are part of Operation Talisman Sabre (TS17), which is the largest joint exercise by the Australian Defence Force and the American military.

It comes after tensions between North Korea and the international community were ramped up even further over the last fortnight.

Fears have also been raised over the hermit kingdom’s missile launches, with concerns the regime is developing an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capable of reaching the US mainland.

Operation Talisman Sabre, which will involve 10 days of field warfare practice, is designed to prepare armies for a real-life invasion scenario.

“Well I think everyone is watching the news at the moment and seeing how uncertain a place the world is and this gives us a fantastic opportunity to practice high-end war-fighting skills,” Major General Paul McLachlan, the commander of the Army’s 1st Division, told SBS World News.

He added: “It’s no good consistently using really high-end technology against a low-end enemy.”

North Korea has vowed to continue developing its nuclear capabilities and carry out frequent missile launches.

Just days ago, its official propaganda newspaper hailed another successful rocket test, saying the country will keep pushing on developing weapons of mass destruction.”
