Over the years, the left side of the back line has proven to be Guardiola’s Achilles heel at Manchester City. The Spaniard has utilised Gaël Clichy, Kolarov, Benjamin Mendy, Zinchenko, Angeliño and Joao Cancelo over the past six years of his reign as manager.
Joao Cancelo, who is the only name still left at the Etihad has arguably been the most productive of all the aforementioned players.
While the Portuguese full back continues to impress on the left flank, he still remains Kyle Walker’s first option back up on the right side.
Manchester however are edging closer to providing Cancelo with a back up option in the newly begun season.
Reports via top football journalist, Fabrizio Romano states that Manchester City inch closer to finalising deal for Andelecht left-back Sergio Gómez for an excess of €10m. The icing on the cake appears to be Mancity considering to keeping the 21 year old at the Etihad, rather than loaning him out for a year as earlier agreed. The deal is reportedly meant to keep Gómez at Manchester City for four years with hopes of immediately integrating him into the first team.
The Cucurella transfer hijack may just be a blessing in disguise. Manchester City get to sign a young left-back and still have enough left over to opt for Alex Grimaldo or Borna Sosa if they may.
