The long awaited Community Shield kicked off at 17:00 in the King Power stadium. Pep Guardiola drafted a brilliant starting XI including marquee signing, Erling Haaland.
Manchester City had a rather poor start in the first period. They might have gotten too used to playing and dominating without an orthodox centre forward. Despite gaining more possession of the ball, they lacked creativity in the final third, limiting the number of chances created.
Liverpool were able to capitalise and took an early lead through Alexander Arnold. The English defender curled a shot from outside the 18-yard box which took a slight deflection off Nathan Ake’s head and took the ball out of Ederson’s reach. The first half ended in that fashion and Liverpool were ahead at the break.
The second half was much better. Grealish and Mahrez were both substituted while Alvarez and Foden replaced them. It was a dream debut for Alvarez as he grabbed an equaliser on the 70 minute mark. Foden had his attemp at goal blocked by Adrian but he quickly reacted and flicked the ball towards Alvarez who tucked it in with ease.
Liverpool had a penalty after Ruben Dias’ hand ball and Salah slot it home, giving Liverpool the lead again. Haaland scored again in extra time, but it was disallowed as the ball went out of play before Foden picked his pass.
Darwin Nunez scored a goal and settled it in extra time. The match ended 3-1 in favour of Liverpool and they won the trophy.
Manchester City looked sloppy throughout the match; substitutes Foden and Alvarez were the headline makers for the team lat the end of the match. Here’s the player ratings for the game
