Liverpool lock horns with Manchester United on Monday night. Both teams have had a really terrible start to the season. It can go from bad to worse for any of the two teams if they lose the tie.
Despite losing their first two matches of the season, Manchester United stand a chance to leapfrog Liverpool with a win at the Old Trafford. Liverpool can go five points ahead of United if they claim an away victory.
Jurgen Klopp spoke to the press ahead of the crucial tie. This is what the Gaffer said:
Injury update: “Firmino trained normally and is ready for United.”
on if someone has recovered: “No, nobody came back.”
on reports that Naby is unhappy from Germany: “I have to respond on ‘news’ but if you learn on my side 0.0% is behind the news. Nobody came to me and asked anything about things like that. He was ill, now he is in training and looking good. Not a player overly happy when he’s not playing, but all fine.”
on Darwin: “He was very disappointed in himself. The centre-half is not the only player in the world doing these things. We never had a situation here like this before which is why I’m not an expert in these talks. He apologised. He knew [it’s a mistake].”
on the last season: “When we had those two results (v United) last season I knew already it wouldn’t happen again this year. This is a completely different situation.”
on the start of the season: “We wasn’t happy with [Fulham] performance, Palace was really good but special because of red card. Can’t remember seeing 10v11 where 10 put them under pressure so much. We did well. We want results and they help but we need performances to work with.”
on Agbonlahor slating Man United after the game against Brentford: “I was on the way home, listening to Talksport. I almost called in! We played Villa in my first season and won 6-0 – I don’t remember him being a mentality monster then!”
on Man United: “Ten Hag wants to build from the back, we were for sure not ready for the game in pre-season. Made some mistakes and they used them well. I heard Martial can play now. Another boy with speed and technique. Quality in midfield; Eriksen, Fernandes, Fred…Real quality.”
on Gomez: “It is an opportunity for him. He only came back to team training a day before the game so I made a decision. He’s back normal training and he looks great. He will start.”
on Diogo Jota and Curtis Jones: “Getting closer, but no chance for this game.”
