Six Liverpool players make ballon d’or nomination list

By David ElumeluAugust 12, 2022No Comments

Last season was Liverpool’s most productive ever. The Reds snatched the Carabao Cup and FA Cup from the jaws of Thomas Tuchel’s trophy hungry Chelsea.

Jürgen Klopp’s side still had enough fuel in the tank to chase down Manchester City toe-to-toe, in the battle for the Premier league until the final day. However, Liverpool’s failure to leapfrog Pep Guardiola’s team to the title shattered their hopes of an unprecedented quadruple.

City’s slender one point win devastated Liverpool, and also cascaded into their Champions league’s contest. Another narrow 1-0 win also robbed them of a compensating treble.

Amidst a bright start to the campaign with a Community Shield win, Liverpool are still welcoming good news. Jürgen Klopp’s fight didn’t go unnoticed. The Germany’s masterclass performance has seen six of his players secure spots in the 30-man 2022 Ballon d’or nominees list.

The sextet include defensive pair Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk; attacking trio- Mohammed Salah, Luis Diaz, and Darwin Nunez; and also midfield fulcrum, Fabinho. Sadio Mane is also not left out feom the list, but will appear under Bayern Munich’s cover, following his recent move the the Bavarian team.

The icing on the cake remains to be Brazilian shot stopper, Alisson Becker who is very well on course to clinch the Yachine trophy of the contest.

Jürgen Klopp will indeed be quite satisfied to see that the rigor of last season is beginning to yield its dividends in full.
